9. High Data Usage: Causes & Tips
1. Plan Types Overview
Untangled offers Mobile and Data-only plans, available on 4G and 5G networks.
- Shared Plans is where your data is pooled with other users on the same account. If on person uses less, another can use more.
- Standalone Plans is where your plan has its own data allowance. Unused data can often roll over into a bank for later use.
- Mobile Plans include calls, SMS, and data.
- Data Only Plans are used for internet access only.
Key Plan Features Explained
Data Sharing
- Lets you pool data across multiple users on the same account.
- Example: If one user doesn't user all their monthly data, another ser on the same plan can use it.
Data Banking
- Lets you roll over unused data into a "bank" to use later.
- Example: If you don't use all your monthly standalone mobile or data, it gets used for the future (instead of expiring).
What's the difference between 4G and 5G?
4G covers most areas in Australia and provides reliable speeds. 5G offers much faster speeds, but is only available in selected areas with compatible devices.
- 4G is a reliabile and widely available network.
- 5G has faster speeds and lower latency (great for heavy data use), but coverage can depend on location.

2. Voicemail Setup
- Dial 101 to set up your voicemail greeting or listen to messages.
Visual Voicemail
This feature is only available on the Telstra Retail network and is not supported on the Telstra Wholesale network, which Untangled operates on. However:
- Currently available only on Samsung devices
- Not supported on iPhone or other Android models
📌 NOTE: You can still use standard voicemail (dial 101) if Visual Voicemail is not supported.
Steps to Set Up Visual Voicemail (Samsung)
-
Ensure your phone is connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
-
Open the Phone app.
-
Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) > Settings > Voicemail > Visual Voicemail.
-
Follow the setup wizard and enter your voicemail PIN if prompted.
3. International Roaming
- Ensure Roaming is enabled for your Telstra Wholesale sim
- To activate a roaming pack, send an SMS with one of the following codes to 179:
-
ROAM3
– 3GB, 300 mins, 300 SMS, valid for 3 days -
ROAM5
– 5GB, 30 mins, 30 SMS, valid for 7 days -
ROAM10
– 10GB, 60 mins, 60 SMS, valid for 14 days
-
Refer to Knowledgebase Article: How to Enable International Roaming for detailed steps.
💡 SMS to 179 is free and works both in Australia and abroad.
4. Plan Changes
You may make upgrade or change your mobile or data plans, take note:
- Best time to make a change: 27th of each month (end of billing cycle).
- Changes made mid-cycle may affect your current bill.
5. Data Usage Monitoring
Standalone Services: Send BAL to 179
Sending BAL
to 179 will usually check the balance or limit for a specific standalone service.
- This applies only to non-shared / standalone accounts.
- It does not provide balance information for shared (pooling) accounts.
Shared Pool Services:BAL Query through Support
If the number is part of a shared pool (e.g., a 180GB shared plan), theBAL
check will not return the overall pool balance. Instead, usage can only be monitored at the pool level through the provided reporting or portal, or raise a query to support@untangled.com.au
Delay in Usage Reporting
Data usage reporting is not in real time. There is typically a 24–48 hour delay before usage is updated. This delay occurs because the data first needs to propagate through the Telstra Retail systems before it becomes available for Telstra Wholesale (the carrier Untangled operates on).
6. Shared Data Plans
-
Data is pooled across users on the same account.
-
If one user exceeds their share, they draw from the pool.
-
A default spend limit of $100 per service applies.
7. SMS and MMS
-
SMS/MMS may be included depending on your plan (check Plan CIS).
-
iMessage behaviour:
-
Blue bubbles = iMessage (uses Wi-Fi/data).
-
Green bubbles = SMS/MMS (uses mobile network).
-
📌 NOTE: MMS uses mobile data. Separate charges may apply if not included in your plan.
8. Mobile Data Settings
Your device must have the correct APN (Access Point Name) set to access mobile data.
The correct APN for Untangled (Telstra Wholesale network) is: telstra.internet
Check the APN on your iPhone (iOS)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular depending on your version).
- Tap Mobile Data Options.
- Select Mobile Data Network.
- Under APN, make sure it is set to: telstra.internet
- If it shows something else, tap and update it.
- Exit Settings (changes are saved automatically).
💡 Tip: If you don’t see the “Mobile Data Network” option, your carrier settings may lock it by default. Restart your iPhone after updating to ensure the changes take effect.
Check the APN on your Android (may vary slightly by device)
- Open Settings.
-
Tap Connections or Network & Internet.
-
Select Mobile Networks.
-
Tap Access Point Names (APN).
If an APN already exists:
- Tap it, check the APN field, and make sure it says telstra.internet
If no APN is listed or it's incorrect:
- Tap Add (usually a + symbol)
- Enter Name: Untangled
- Enter APN: telstra.internet
- Leave other fields blank unless pre-filled.
- Tap Save.
- Select the Untangled APN you just added.
💡 Tip: After making changes, turn Airplane Mode on and off or restart your phone to refresh the connection.
9. High Data Usage: Causes & Tips
Mobile data can sometimes run out faster than expected. This is often caused by apps or settings running in the background without you noticing. Here’s what to look out for and how to manage it:
Common Causes of High Data Usage
-
Background App Refresh – Apps like Facebook, Instagram, or email keep updating even when you’re not using them.
-
Streaming – Watching videos on YouTube, Netflix, or listening to Spotify uses a large amount of data.
-
Automatic Updates – Apps and system updates can download in the background using mobile data.
-
Hotspot / Tethering – Sharing your mobile data with another device (like a laptop) can quickly use up your allowance.
-
Cloud Backups – Services like iCloud, Google Photos, or OneDrive may automatically upload photos and videos.
-
Poor Wi-Fi Signal – Some phones automatically switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi is weak (called Wi-Fi Assist on iPhone).
Tips to Reduce Mobile Data Usage
Turn off Background App Refresh
-
iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, and turn it off for apps you don’t need updating.
-
Android: Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Mobile data & Wi-Fi, and switch off “Allow background data usage."
Disable Wi-Fi Assist (iPhone only)
-
Go to Settings > Mobile Data, scroll down, and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
-
This stops your iPhone from automatically switching to mobile data when Wi-Fi is weak.
Restrict Updates to Wi-Fi Only
-
App Stores, Photos, and Cloud backups can be set to update only on Wi-Fi.
-
iPhone: Go to Settings > App Store > Mobile Data, and turn it off.
-
Android: Open Google Play Store > Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps > Over Wi-Fi only.
Enable Data Saver Mode
-
iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Low Data Mode.
-
Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver, and switch it on.
Monitor Your Usage Regularly
-
iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data → see per-app usage.
-
Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage.
-
Untangled Portal: Log in to check usage (note: updates may be delayed by 24–48 hours).
Example Data Usage Guide
Here's an idea of how much data common activities can use:
Activity | Approx. Data Used |
---|---|
Browsing websites (1 hour) | 60–100 MB |
Social media scrolling (1 hour) | 150–300 MB |
Music streaming (1 hour) | 100–150 MB |
Video call (1 hour, Zoom/Teams) | 700 MB–1.5 GB |
Streaming video (1 hour, SD) | 700 MB |
Streaming video (1 hour, HD) | 2–3 GB |
Streaming video (1 hour, 4K) | 7 GB+ |
Uploading 100 photos to cloud | 500 MB–1 GB |
💡 Tip: Video quality makes a big difference — watching in SD instead of HD can cut data use by more than half.
